AI
AGI stands for artificial general intelligence: AI that can take on virtually any thinking task the way a person can, including tasks it was never trained or set up for. It does not exist yet; everything you use today is AI for specific tasks.
The difference with the AI you use now is breadth. A language model like ChatGPT is narrow: very good at language and patterns, and it looks broadly capable because almost anything can be phrased as text. But it learns nothing between conversations, it has no goals of its own, and it does not know when it is out of its depth. AGI would learn new tasks by itself, combine across fields, and handle a new problem without someone first building a prompt, tool or dataset for it.
Four practical differences. Scope: today's AI is strong per task, AGI would be task-independent. Learning: current models are fixed after training, AGI would keep learning from experience. Autonomy: today a human sets the task and the steps, with AGI the system would choose its own approach. Reliability: a model works with probabilities and can state something wrong very convincingly — human checking does not go away while AGI isn't here.
The term is used loosely in the market. Vendors sometimes call a new model 'a step towards AGI' or even AGI itself, while there is no agreed yardstick to establish that. For a business decision it barely matters: you pick a tool on what it demonstrably does in your process today, not on where the technology might be in a few years.
Tip
Judge AI tools on the task you want to remove now and on what you can verify yourself. That pays off straight away, regardless of how far off AGI is.
