Meta advertising: Facebook and Instagram Ads explained

Meta Ads reaches large audiences across Facebook and Instagram, with AI making more of the choices. How it works and what you still steer.

Meta Ads is Meta's advertising platform: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network, all managed from Ads Manager. You reach large audiences based on interests, behaviour and your own data — and increasingly you let the system decide who exactly sees the ad.

This page explains how the platform works, what Advantage+ means, which ad formats exist and where campaigns stall in practice. For the channel choice around it, see media mix and online marketing channels.

How Meta Ads works

There are three layers:

  1. Campaign — where you pick the objective: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion or sales.
  2. Ad set — budget, schedule, audience, placements and the event you optimise for.
  3. Ad — the creative itself: image, video, carousel, collection or catalogue ad.

Meta keeps moving toward automation. With Advantage+, the system takes over decisions on targeting, placements and creative combinations, and campaign types are being merged into one streamlined flow. Your steering shifts from settings to inputs: the offer, the creative, audience signals and the quality of your conversion data.

Ad formats

Targeting: what you still control

Classic targeting on demographics, interests and behaviour still exists but matters less. The real levers now are:

  • Custom audiences — site visitors, customer lists, video viewers, people who engaged with your profile.
  • Lookalikes — similar profiles based on your best customers.
  • Exclusions — excluding existing customers when acquiring, or addressing only existing customers.
  • Creative as targeting — which ad resonates decides, in practice, who responds.

Measurement: no signals, no optimisation

Meta optimises on the events you send back. That means:

  • Install the Meta Pixel and use the Conversions API where possible for server-side signals. See server-side tracking.
  • Stay consent-proof: load tags according to your consent mode setup.
  • For stores, send value with the event (revenue per purchase) so you can optimise on ROAS instead of counts.
  • Compare platform numbers with your own source (GA4, your store, your CRM). Meta attributes conversions to itself inside its own window; your accounting does not.

Where campaigns stall

  • Too many campaigns, too little budget each. The system can't learn if every set gets a handful of conversions a week.
  • One creative. Creative is the biggest variable now. Without variation, results decay through ad fatigue.
  • Judging everything on last click. Awareness and consideration rarely convert directly but do move your total enquiries.
  • Ignoring the landing page. A good ad on a slow or unclear page stays expensive. See conversion optimisation.
  • A broken measurement setup. Missing or duplicate events make every conclusion unreliable.

When does Meta advertising fit?

Meta is strong when you have a visually appealing offer, a broad audience, a short decision path, or a need for reach and awareness. For sharply defined business decision makers, LinkedIn advertising is often more precise, and for people actively searching, Google Ads makes more sense. In practice these channels work together: search harvests existing demand, Meta creates it.

Frequently asked questions about Meta advertising

What is a good starting budget?

Enough for each ad set to collect meaningful conversions within a week. One set with sufficient budget beats five without.

Should I use Advantage+ or manual setup?

Both exist side by side, but Meta is pushing automation. Use automation for volume and keep a manual campaign where you need to test something specific.

How often should I refresh creative?

As soon as frequency climbs and results drop. That is a signal in your numbers, not a fixed schedule.

Can I use the same assets on Facebook and Instagram?

Partly. Ratios and tone differ; vertical video usually outperforms a landscape banner-style ad on Reels and Stories.
