Instagram advertising

Instagram ads run through Meta but need their own creative: vertical, visual and fast. Placements, formats, creators and the mistakes that cost money.

Brandable·Eindhoven

You advertise on Instagram through Meta Ads Manager or directly from the app with the boost button. Instagram runs in the same ad system as Facebook, but usage is different: more visual, more video, more creators. If you make Instagram ads as if they were Facebook ads, you usually pay too much.

This page is about paid advertising. For organic growth (content, profile, Reels strategy) read Instagram marketing. For the underlying platform: Meta advertising.

Instagram placements

PlacementFormatPurpose
FeedImage, carousel or video, ideally 4:5Showing product and proposition
StoriesVertical 9:16, full screenShort, direct, with link
ReelsVertical video 9:16Reach, discovery, holding attention
ExploreBetween discovery contentReaching new audiences
Profile feed and search resultsFeed formatExtra reach among active users

With vertical formats, mind the safe zone: profile name, buttons and caption cover the top and bottom of your image. Key text and the product belong in the middle.

Boost from the app or use Ads Manager?

  • Boosting from the app is quick and suits giving a well-performing post extra reach. You get little control over goals, measurement and testing.
  • Ads Manager is for steering on sales, leads or website actions. You choose the objective, use the Pixel and Conversions API, test variants and see results per placement.

Working with creators: partnership ads

With partnership ads (formerly branded content ads) you advertise with a creator's post or Reel, shown from the creator's account with your brand as partner. That often feels more credible than a brand ad. The creator must grant permission in the app. Agree in writing how long and for what you may use the content.

Creative that works on Instagram

  • Open with movement or a person. The first second decides whether someone scrolls on.
  • Make sound optional. Many people watch without sound; use captions or on-screen text.
  • Show the product in use. Not just a packshot, but the effect or the moment.
  • Create variety. Several hooks, formats and angles give the system material to match different people.
  • Native over polished. Content that looks like normal Instagram content often outperforms a TV spot in vertical format.

Instagram Shopping and catalogue ads

Connect your product catalogue (via Commerce Manager or a feed) to Meta and you can tag products and run catalogue ads that automatically show the right product to the right person, for example someone who viewed it before. For webshops a good feed matters as much here as for Google Shopping; tools like Channable help optimise feeds per channel.

When Instagram fits

Instagram is strong for visual products and services: fashion, beauty, interiors, food, travel, events, lifestyle and local businesses with a strong look. For younger audiences TikTok can complement or replace it; for business decision-makers LinkedIn is more precise.

Common mistakes

  • Horizontal visuals on vertical placements. That instantly looks like an ad and gets skipped.
  • Steering only on likes. Engagement isn't revenue. Choose an objective that matches your business goal.
  • No measurement after the click. Without Pixel and Conversions API the system optimises for clickers, not buyers.
  • Too little creative. One Reel running for months quickly loses effect.

Frequently asked questions about Instagram advertising

How do I advertise on Instagram?

Connect your professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page and ad account in Meta Business Suite, and create the campaign in Ads Manager with Instagram as placement. For a quick boost you can also promote a post from the app.

Do I need a Facebook Page to advertise on Instagram?

Not always for boosting from the app, but for Ads Manager campaigns you connect your Instagram account to your Meta business setup. In practice you work with both.

What does Instagram advertising cost?

You set your own budget; the price per result varies by audience, sector and creative. Judge campaigns on cost per purchase or lead, not click price.

Which is better: Reels ads or Stories?

Both are vertical and you can often use the same video. Reels are stronger for reach and discovery, Stories for short, direct messages. Let the system distribute and review results per placement.

What are partnership ads?

Ads using a creator's content, shown from the creator's account with your brand as partner. The creator grants permission in the app.

Can I advertise on Instagram without Facebook ads?

Yes, with manual placements you choose Instagram only. Whether that is smart depends on your audience; compare first in one campaign with both placements.
