An SSL certificate (technically TLS these days) encrypts traffic between visitor and server. You recognise it by https in the address bar.
Without a valid certificate browsers warn visitors, which immediately costs trust and conversions. For forms and payments it's simply mandatory.
After an expiry or a migration, check your redirects: everything should point permanently to the https version so you don't end up with duplicate addresses.
