Ad interim

Strategy and planning

Ad interim (abbreviated a.i.) means "in the meantime": someone fills a role temporarily, until there is a permanent appointment or things are back to normal.

It comes from Latin. You often see it after a job title, such as "marketing manager a.i." or "director ad interim", which makes clear the role is filled temporarily.

Someone ad interim usually has a real mandate: they make decisions and lead, and later hand over to a permanent successor.

Tip

Agree up front what the a.i. person may decide and when the assignment ends. Without a mandate and an end goal, a temporary role tends to drag on.
