Emergent: the complete guide

What Emergent is, how the autonomous agent works, what it costs and when it is — and is not — the right choice. Factual, with sources.

Emergent (emergent.sh) is an agentic app builder: you describe what you want to build in plain language, and an autonomous AI agent builds, tests and publishes the application itself — often without you seeing any code at all. The platform was founded in the US via Y Combinator and grew rapidly in 2026 to a billion-dollar valuation. This guide explains what Emergent is, how it works, what we can and cannot verify about the figures, and when it's a sensible choice.

What exactly is Emergent?

According to its own description on emergent.sh, Emergent is "an AI platform that turns your ideas into fully functioning applications: you describe what you want to build in natural language, and our AI handles the code, the design and the deployment." On the YC company page it's framed more sharply as "autonomous coding agents that replace traditional software development by generating, testing and deploying production applications, directly from a plain-language instruction."

The distinguishing factor compared with a tool like Lovable is the degree of autonomy. Where many AI builder systems have you watching and steering step by step, Emergent explicitly positions itself as an agent that picks up a task and completes it independently. The site names three product lines: an AI Website Builder, an AI App Builder (mobile apps) and an AI Web App Builder.

Note: that's Emergent's own promise. In practice the result depends heavily on how sharply you brief the agent and how critically you review its output — Emergent itself wrote on its blog that deployment reliability was a pain point for a while.

How Emergent works

Emergent's own blog (emergent.sh/blog) makes it fairly easy to reconstruct how the platform fits together. The main parts:

  • E3, the autonomous agent. In the announcement "Introducing E3: Autonomous app building on Emergent" (8 June 2026), Emergent presents its latest agent version. E3 keeps working on a task autonomously for longer than a chat-driven builder: you give it a goal and the agent plans, builds and tests in steps.
  • Kubernetes environments. The blog post "Real Environments for AI Agents: Why We Bet on Kubernetes" (3 March 2026) states that Emergent runs agent workloads on Kubernetes — that is, in isolated, scalable environments rather than a shared sandbox.
  • Multi-model, not one proprietary model. A series of announcements (including "Claude Opus 4.6 Is Now Available in Emergent", 18 March 2026; "GPT-5.4 Now Live on Emergent", 9 March 2026; "GPT-5.3 Codex Is Now Live on Emergent", 3 March 2026) show that Emergent deploys underlying models from Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI (GPT), and regularly refreshes them to newer versions. Emergent is therefore an orchestration layer on top of existing frontier models, not a proprietary language model.
  • MCP connector. With "Introducing the Emergent MCP Connector: Build Apps Straight From Claude or ChatGPT" (22 June 2026), you can also control Emergent from Claude or ChatGPT via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • Emmy, the assistant. "Meet Emmy: Your Always-On Emergent Assistant" (31 July 2026) introduces a free, always-available in-product assistant for writing prompts, guiding the agent, troubleshooting and assisting with deployment.
  • Wingman, security. The blog post "Building Security Into Wingman From the Start" (10 July 2026) points to a security-focused feature or initiative called Wingman. So Emergent builds security checks into the agent itself, rather than bolting them on afterwards.
  • Proprietary deployment engine. In "From Prompt to Production: Why We Rebuilt Our Deployment Engine" (24 July 2026), Emergent describes having rebuilt its deployment pipeline. An earlier post, "We Had an 85% Deployment Success Rate. Here's the Assumption We Broke to Fix It." (2 July 2026), is a notable self-acknowledgement that deployment wasn't always 100% reliable. That 85% figure is a snapshot from that period, not a current success rate.
  • Custom domain. According to "How to Buy a Custom Domain on Emergent?" (13 May 2026), you can purchase a custom domain and link it to your published app.
  • GitHub integration. The pricing page lists "GitHub integration" and "Fork tasks" as features only available from the paid Standard plan upward — not on the free plan. "Fork tasks" lets you try a variant of a task alongside the existing version.

There are two things to pin down up front: which technical stack Emergent generates under the hood, and on what terms you can take that code and your data out. That determines how free you are to keep building later — with or without Emergent.

Getting started with Emergent

The first step is creating an account and formulating your first task in plain language: what should the app do, for whom, and which core functionality is essential. The agent picks up that instruction, builds a first version and often publishes it within minutes, after which you can test the results in practice rather than reviewing intermediate code.

Because the agent works independently, the discipline shifts from "writing code" to "giving clear instructions and checking the results". That means: formulating small, manageable tasks instead of one giant brief, testing after every step to confirm the output is correct, and correcting course promptly as soon as the agent takes a wrong turn. Getting this process right prevents small misunderstandings from piling up into an unworkable result.

Typical early pitfalls are overly vague instructions, asking for too much functionality at once, and checking data and authorisation too late in the process. Prompting and briefing in Emergent

Because Emergent is an autonomous agent rather than a step-by-step assistant, the quality of your briefing matters more than with traditional AI builder systems. A prompt that leaves too much open to interpretation produces an app that technically works but isn't what you meant — and you often only notice that after publishing.

Good prompting in Emergent means being concrete about goal, target audience, data requirements and constraints (for example: which fields a form needs, which roles get access, or whether an integration with an existing system is required). It helps to keep tasks small, be explicit about what you don't want, and check along the way whether the agent is on the right track before handing over the next instruction.

The company behind Emergent

Emergent was founded by Mukund Jha (founder, previously at Google and Dunzo) and Madhav Jha (co-founder and CTO, PhD in theoretical computer science from Penn State, postdoc at Sandia National Labs and former founding member of the AWS SageMaker research team), according to the Y Combinator company page. The company was part of Y Combinator's Summer 2024 (S24) batch.

Following the July 2026 Series C, Emergent was valued, per its own announcement of 15 July 2026, at $1.5 billion — a "unicorn" status the company itself describes as a fivefold increase in valuation in roughly four months since the Series B. This is confirmed by press reports (including Pulse2.com, 15 July 2026), but the underlying user and revenue figures remain company claims. For the most current status, always check the source itself: emergent.sh/news.

Note the vintage of the figures: the YC page cites "5M+ users, 6M+ applications, $50M ARR," while the later Series C announcement (July 2026) refers to 12M+ apps built. These are measurements from different points in time, not a contradiction — but always cite them with a date.

Pricing in brief

Emergent uses a credit system across four plans: Free, Standard, Pro and Business/Enterprise (custom). Free provides a limited number of monthly credits without GitHub integration; paid plans add more credits, private hosting, GitHub integration and, on Pro and above, things like a larger context window and priority support. When does Emergent fit, and when not?

Emergent itself names a number of target audiences on its site: SME owners who want to build internal tools without a development team, agencies that want to deliver client projects faster, product managers turning requirements into working apps, and operations teams looking to automate processes. Examples cited include CRMs, logistics/warehouse tools, e-commerce sites, and internal "command centre" tools that replace several separate SaaS subscriptions.

Emergent never says what the platform is not meant for. The split below is our own assessment, based on the audience Emergent names and what we see working in practice with this type of builder.

Reason for this caution: Emergent itself has acknowledged in blog posts that deployment reliability was once an issue (the 85% figure, see above) and that security functionality (Wingman) was still under active development in mid-2026. These aren't reasons to write Emergent off, but they are reasons to carry out your own technical and security check before going live.

What's needed for production?

Before taking an Emergent app to real users, it's wise to arrange at least the following:

  • An explicit check on authorisation and data security, even if the platform partly handles this.
  • A round of testing with real usage scenarios, not just the happy path.
  • Clarity on ownership and export of your project and data: make sure you can get the code and the database out.
  • A plan for ongoing development: who manages and iterates on the app once it's live?
  • For sensitive or personal data: check with Emergent about hosting location and data processing terms (see below).

EU/NL availability, GDPR and security

Emergent publishes no GDPR statement, no SOC2 or ISO27001 certification and names no European data region. The Enterprise plan does offer audit logs, a priority SLA and the option to deploy in your own cloud (VPC) — useful, but not the same as a compliance certification.

If you process personal data of EU citizens, ask Emergent directly about the data processing agreement and the hosting location, and put the answers in writing. That's good practice with any US vendor, not just this one.

Emergent vs Lovable

Emergent and Lovable are often mentioned in the same breath because both promise a working app without your own development team, but the approach differs fundamentally. Emergent positions itself on autonomy: you give it a task and the agent (E3) largely executes it independently, from code to deployment. Lovable works more like a co-building copilot with a readable, exportable React/TypeScript codebase and an integrated Supabase backend, giving you more visibility and control over what's being built along the way.

That difference in approach carries through into practice: if you prefer "give the instruction and check the result", you'll likely feel more at home with Emergent; if you prefer to watch the code and make quick changes yourself, Lovable leans more your way. The two also diverge on things like code management, export options and the type of project each platform is strongest at.

Emergent and other alternatives

Besides Lovable, Emergent is also compared with platforms like v0, Bolt.new, Replit Agent, Base44 and Cursor, and sometimes with a classic custom-built project. We couldn't find a reliable, current source with a direct feature or price comparison across all these platforms, so we deliberately avoid hard, general claims about "better" or "faster" — the tools differ too much in approach, target audience and maturity to reduce to a single ranking.

What can be said is that each platform makes different choices around autonomy, code access, hosting and pricing model, and those choices matter more for whether a tool fits your project than a generic ranking would suggest. For SME tools and internal workflows, Emergent's autonomous approach can work well; for projects where you want to customise a lot yourself, a tool with exportable code is often more comfortable.
