Content and brand
Brand awareness is how far your audience knows your brand and mentions it spontaneously when thinking about your category.
There are two flavours: aided awareness (do they recognise your name in a list?) and spontaneous awareness (do they name you unprompted?). The second is costlier to build and more valuable.
Awareness works with a delay. You see it in more branded searches, higher click rates and cheaper ads, not in this week's conversion rate.
In practice
Judging brand campaigns on direct conversion almost always means stopping at the wrong moment. Track branded search volume and direct traffic across quarters.
