An auth code (also EPP code or transfer code) is the unique code you use to move a domain name from one provider to another.
You request the code from your current provider or registrar, who releases it to the domain holder. The new provider uses it to request the transfer, which the registry then confirms.
For .nl domains the transfer usually completes within a day; other extensions such as .com can take a few days. Set up DNS at the new provider first so your website and email keep working during the move.
In practice
Transferring without preparing DNS, or while the domain is about to expire. Your site and mail go down temporarily — renew first, then transfer.
