As of today, 15 June 2026, TikTok Shop is available in the Netherlands. That means people can buy products they see in a video or livestream directly in the TikTok app, without visiting a web shop. For Dutch brands and online stores it's a new sales channel, with opportunities and a few serious points of attention.
Below you'll read what TikTok Shop is, how it works, who it suits and how to start sensibly.
What is TikTok Shop?
TikTok Shop is TikTok's shopping feature. Sellers list their products in the app, and those products can be bought in several places:
| Where | How it works |
|---|---|
| Shoppable videos | A product link below a video; viewers tap and check out in the app |
| LIVE Shopping | You show products during a livestream and viewers buy straight away |
| Shop tab | A dedicated shopping area in the app where people search and browse |
| Product showcase | A small shop on your profile with all your products |
| Affiliate creators | Creators promote your product and earn commission per sale |
Checkout, payment and customer details run through TikTok. You manage products, orders, stock and shipping via the TikTok Shop Seller Center.
Why this is a big step
Until now, TikTok in the Netherlands was mainly a place where people discover products and then buy elsewhere. That "elsewhere" is exactly where many people drop off: loading another site, searching again, filling in details. TikTok Shop removes that step. See, tap, buy.
In countries where TikTok Shop has run longer, like the United Kingdom and the United States, it has grown into a serious sales channel, especially for beauty, fashion, home and lifestyle, gadgets and food. How quickly it catches on in the Netherlands remains to be seen. It's a new channel, and Dutch users still need to get used to buying in an app they mainly use for watching.
Who is TikTok Shop for?
Good candidates:
- Products you can show in a few seconds that trigger an "oh, I want that" moment
- Impulse purchases at a price point people don't think about for long
- Brands that already make video, or know creators who fit their product
- Categories like beauty, personal care, fashion, accessories, home, kitchen, gadgets and hobby
Less obvious:
- Expensive products with a long consideration phase (there TikTok is mainly a discovery channel)
- Products that need a lot of explanation, customisation or advice
- B2B services (TikTok Shop is for physical products)
- Brands without capacity to create new content regularly
How selling works
- Sign up as a seller in the TikTok Shop Seller Center, with your business details (such as Chamber of Commerce registration) and a bank account.
- Add products: manually, or via an integration with your web shop platform or a feed tool. Shopify has an official TikTok app; for other platforms, tools like Channable and ChannelEngine work on integrations. Check which integration is currently available for your platform.
- Link your account: connect your TikTok business account to your shop so you can add products to videos and livestreams.
- Arrange shipping and returns: TikTok sets requirements for delivery times and handling. Make sure your fulfilment can handle it.
- Create content featuring your products: your own videos, livestreams and creator collaborations.
TikTok charges a commission per sale, and for affiliate sales the creator's commission comes on top. The exact rates and terms for the Netherlands are in the Seller Center. Run the numbers before setting your prices.
Creators: the engine behind TikTok Shop
The biggest difference from a regular web shop is the affiliate programme. Creators can sell your products in their own videos and livestreams and receive a percentage of the revenue. So you only pay when something sells.
A few tips:
- Choose creators for fit, not followers. A smaller creator with an audience that matches your product often sells better than a big name. See also vanity metrics.
- Send samples. Creators want to use a product themselves first.
- Give freedom. A creator knows what works with their audience. A rigid script quickly turns a video into an ad.
- Agree on honesty. Promotion must be recognisable as advertising. That's required by TikTok and by Dutch influencer marketing rules.
What to watch
- Margins. Commission for TikTok, commission for creators, discount campaigns and shipping costs add up. Know what you keep per product.
- Customer relationship. Customers buy from you, but through TikTok. You have less control over the customer experience and data than in your own web shop. Use TikTok Shop as an extra channel, not a replacement.
- Stock and delivery. A video that goes viral can empty your stock in a day. Keep stock synchronised so you don't sell what you don't have.
- Service. Fast delivery and good responses to questions count towards how TikTok rates and shows your shop.
- Brand. Constant discounts teach customers to wait for the next deal. Guard your price position and brand image.
- A new channel. Features, terms and the algorithm are still changing. Expect to adjust in the first months.
How to start sensibly
- Pick 5 to 10 products that are visually strong and have healthy margins. Don't start with your whole catalogue.
- Content first, then sales. Test organically which videos land before spending on ads.
- Work with 3 to 5 creators as a test, and see who really sells.
- Try a short livestream, for example a product demo with viewer questions.
- Scale what works with TikTok ads for Shop. Read more about ads and content in TikTok marketing for businesses.
- Measure profit, not views. Look at revenue, margin after commissions, returns and repeat purchases.
What does this mean for your marketing mix?
TikTok Shop turns TikTok into a place where discovery and buying come together. That changes the channel's role, but not the basics: your product has to be good, your brand recognisable and your content worth watching. For some brands TikTok Shop becomes a key sales channel; for others TikTok remains mainly a place to be found, with sales in their own web shop.
