Lovable's Chat mode is the mode where you talk with the AI about your project without it changing your code or files. You compare ideas, build a plan together and ask questions about how your app works. Lovable introduced the free version on 24 September 2026: every workspace gets a daily free chat allowance.
Below: what Chat mode does exactly, what you can use it for, what it costs and how it differs from Plan mode.
What is Chat mode?
Chat mode is a read mode for Lovable's AI. Lovable can read your open code and project files, but changes nothing as long as you stay in this mode. You select it via the mode picker at the top of the chat in your project, next to the options for Plan mode and regular building.
That sounds like a small detail, but it changes how you work with the tool. In the regular chat, Lovable starts building after every message and you burn credits. In Chat mode you get answers, explanations and a plan on paper — without anything in your project changing.
What can you use it for?
Discussing ideas and planning
Lovable's own example: you are making an app for fitness classes and you are unsure whether people book individual sessions or join a monthly membership. In Chat mode you ask Lovable to weigh both options: what does each choice mean for you and for your customers? Let it push back on your plan too. And if you want to compare, ask Lovable to build two drafts so you can put them side by side.
Even while Lovable builds, you can keep talking: ask a question or add a detail you had forgotten. If an idea is easier to explain out loud, just talk to Lovable directly.
Questions about your own project
Lovable can inspect your app and look inside its Lovable Cloud database. Useful questions:
- "Why do customers need to create an account before they can try anything? What changes if they can explore first?"
- "What is driving my Cloud usage right now?"
- "How does order handling actually work in this app?"
You get answers about your project, not about apps in general.
Work around your app
Your app is often part of something bigger: a business, a team, a launch. Lovable can take on the work around it — the email that brings customers to your new app, a guide for colleagues, or a proposal for a client whose app you are extending. Connect Notion, Granola or Linear and Lovable can see your notes and plans. Three customers asking for the same change that is not on your roadmap yet? What does Chat mode cost?
Workspaces on a Free, Pro or Business plan get a daily free chat allowance. A chat message typically costs a small fraction of a credit, so the allowance covers the first part of your day for free. Two exceptions: when the chat generates images or video, and when you hand work off to Plan or Build mode, those use credits as usual. Lovable states that current chat pricing, including the daily allowance, applies through 31 October 2026.

The difference with Plan mode
Chat and Plan are both thinking modes; the difference is in the output. Here they are side by side:

The core: in Chat mode you talk and line up ideas, with no code changes. In Plan mode, Lovable does deep research and creates a detailed plan document that you review and approve first; only then does the AI switch to building. Not sure about touching the code? What to watch out for
To be fair, three caveats:
The free chat saves on preparation, not on building. Everything that gets built eventually costs regular credits. The gain is in making better decisions before you spend them — not in getting work for free.
Answers are only as good as what Lovable can read. Ask "why is my site slow?" and you get a well-founded answer only if Lovable can access the code and data. Verify claims yourself when in doubt; a chat answer is not an audit.
The choice stays yours. Lovable can work out options and challenge your plan, but what you build and why is your decision. For bigger calls — positioning, offering, technology choices — a conversation with someone who works with it daily is still worth a lot.
Our experience
