NotebookLM: what it is and how to use it well

Google's AI tool that answers only from your own sources. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Brandable·Eindhoven

NotebookLM is a free AI tool from Google that lets you ask questions about your own documents. You upload PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube videos or notes, and NotebookLM answers based on exactly those sources. Every answer points to the place in your material it came from.

That makes it fundamentally different from a general chatbot. ChatGPT or Gemini draw on everything they ever learned; NotebookLM stays within what you provide. The chance of invented facts is smaller and you can check every claim.

What you can do with NotebookLM

  • Summarise and dig deeper. Have a sixty-page report summarised and then ask follow-up questions on what matters to you.
  • Audio overviews. NotebookLM turns your sources into a conversation between two AI voices, podcast style. Useful for reviewing a dossier on the go or making complex material accessible. It works in Dutch too.
  • Video overviews and mind maps. A visual summary or a mind map of the main topics and connections.
  • Study aids. FAQs, timelines, briefing documents and practice questions based on your material.
  • Comparing sources. Put interviews, customer feedback or competitor analyses side by side and ask where they agree and where they don't.

How to use it in marketing and content

  • One knowledge base per client or project. Put brand book, past campaigns, personas and customer interviews in one notebook. New colleagues or freelancers get up to speed much faster.
  • Deepening existing content. Upload your best articles and ask which questions remain unanswered. That gives you topics that really fit.
  • Content in another format. A white paper becomes an audio overview, a webinar becomes an FAQ. You reach people who prefer listening to reading.
  • Analysing customer research. Search dozens of interview transcripts for recurring objections and the words customers use themselves.

What to watch out for

  • It's as good as your sources. Upload outdated or contradictory material and that's what you get back.
  • Check citations. NotebookLM links sources neatly, but click through for important decisions.
  • Confidential data. Check your Google account's terms. When working with client data, use a business Workspace account and agree on what may be uploaded.
  • Audio is a summary, not a final product. Use audio overviews internally or as a basis; for publication you want your own voice and review.

Free or paid?

NotebookLM is free with a Google account, with limits on the number of notebooks, sources and daily questions. A paid Google plan or Workspace gives higher limits and extra features. Limits change regularly, so check Google for current figures.

NotebookLM alongside other tools

NotebookLM is strong at understanding and summarising what you already have. For presentations, move the output to Gamma; for an interactive tool or website you can use Lovable. Want to know how AI fits your work? Read about artificial intelligence or book a free strategy session.

Frequently asked questions

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes, with a Google account, within limits. Paid Google plans and Workspace offer higher limits.

Does NotebookLM make things up?

Less readily than a general chatbot, because it works from your own sources and cites them. Always check important answers though.
