XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language) is a stricter variant of HTML that follows XML rules: every tag must be properly closed and correctly nested.
XHTML was popular around 2000, but modern websites use HTML5, which is more flexible and today's standard. If you come across XHTML in an old site or email template, it usually still works fine; for new pages, choose HTML5.
