Building a website with AI

How AI website builders work, which tool fits you, and what to do and avoid for a site that really works.

Brandable·Eindhoven

With AI you can have a working website in a few hours. You describe in plain language what you want and the tool builds it: pages, layout, forms and sometimes even a database with login. That's genuinely new, and it works.

But a website that's up fast isn't yet a website that works. On this page you'll read how AI website builders work, which tools exist, where it often goes wrong and what you should and shouldn't do. Honest, from our own experience: this site itself was built with AI too.

Short answer: you build a website with AI using an AI builder such as Lovable, or with an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT that writes code for you. AI speeds up building enormously. What AI does not do for you: decide what you want to say, to whom, and why someone should choose you. That's still where the difference lies.

How does building a website with AI work?

There are roughly three ways.

1. AI builders (prompt-to-app)

You type in a chat what you want, for example: "Build a website for a physiotherapy practice in Eindhoven, with a page per treatment, a team page and an appointment form." The tool generates the site, shows a live preview, and you steer with new messages: "Make the heading bigger", "Add an FAQ".

Well-known tools: Lovable, Bolt.new, v0 (by Vercel), Replit and Emergent. The result is real code (with Lovable, React and TypeScript), not a template. That means you can also build things that are hard with a standard website builder: calculators, customer portals, configurators or integrations.

2. AI assistants that write code

With Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini you can have code written, get explanations and fix errors. With tools such as Claude Code or Cursor the AI works directly in your project files. That gives maximum control, but you need to know how to host, publish and maintain a site yourself. This is mainly for people who are already a bit technical.

3. AI in existing website builders

Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer and WordPress (with plugins) have AI features that create a first draft, copy or images. You stay within that builder's system. Handy for a simple site, but you're tied to what the platform can do.

How to approach it: step by step

  1. Start without AI. First write down: who is the site for, what should a visitor do (call, buy, fill in a form), and what questions do they have? This is the most important part, and no tool does it for you.
  2. Make a list of pages. Per page: which question does it answer, and what's the visitor's next step?
  3. Gather your real content. Copy, photos, reviews, cases, prices or way of working. The better your input, the better the result.
  4. Prompt in small steps. Start with structure and style, then page by page. One request per message works better than a wall of text.
  5. Check everything. Read every text, click every button, test on your phone, submit the form yourself.
  6. Sort out the basics. Own domain name, titles and descriptions per page, privacy statement, cookie notice, analytics and backups.
  7. Publish and improve. See what visitors do and adjust. A website is never finished.

Do's

  • Give context. Tell the AI who you are, who the site is for and how you want to sound. "Informal but professional" produces something very different from no instruction.
  • Use your own words and proof. Real cases, real reviews, real photos. That's the difference between a site that builds trust and one that looks like a thousand others.
  • Work in small steps. Big changes at once cause more errors. Small steps are easier to check and undo.
  • Let the AI make a plan first. Many tools have a plan mode. Read the plan before code is built.
  • Think about findability from the start. One clear heading per page, good page titles, fast loading and content that answers questions. Not just for Google, but also for AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity (also called GEO).
  • Test on mobile. Most visitors come via their phone.
  • Make sure the code and domain are yours. Check whether you can export the code or connect it to GitHub, and register your domain in your own name.

Don'ts

  • Don't publish copy you haven't checked. AI sometimes makes things up: opening hours, figures, client names or claims that aren't true. That can cost you credibility.
  • Don't let AI decide your positioning. Ask for "a website for a marketing agency" and you get the average of all marketing agencies. That doesn't set you apart.
  • Don't put passwords or secret keys in a prompt. And don't put customer data into a free tool without knowing what happens to it.
  • Don't build login or a database without checking security. With AI-built apps, the risk often lies in who can see which data. Have it checked if personal data is involved.
  • Don't keep prompting endlessly on the same problem. If something doesn't work after three attempts, describe it differently, take a step back or ask for help.
  • Don't forget maintenance. An AI site also needs updates, new content and checks.
  • Don't choose a tool just because it starts free. Also look at the cost as your site grows, and whether you can switch later.

What AI does well, and what it doesn't

Well: a fast first version, design variants, layout, forms, calculators, translations, draft copy, finding bugs and small changes without a developer.

Less well: real strategic choices, unique content based on your own experience, complex security and large systems with many integrations. Human expertise is still needed there.

Build it yourself with AI or have it built?

Doing it yourself with AI is fine if you have time, know what you want to say and enjoy building. Help is smart if your site needs to bring in customers, if customer data is involved, or if you'd rather spend time on your own work. You can also do both: build it yourself and have an expert look at strategy, copy and technology.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really build a website with AI without coding knowledge?

Yes. With AI builders such as Lovable you describe in plain language what you want. You do need a clear idea of what the site should do, and you must check the result carefully.

What is the best AI tool to build a website?

It depends on what you're building. For custom work with your own features Lovable works well, for a visual site Framer or Webflow, for an online store Shopify. Claude Code or Cursor give the most control, but need more technical knowledge.

Is an AI website findable in Google?

It can be, if you get the basics right: good titles, clear headings, fast loading and content that answers real questions. AI doesn't do this well automatically, so check it.

Is the code of an AI website mine?

With many AI builders it is, but check per tool. Lovable, for example, gives you the code and a GitHub connection. With closed website builders you often can't move.

Can AI write the copy for my website?

Yes, as a first draft. Then adapt it with your own experience, examples and tone, and check every factual claim.

Is building a website with AI safe?

The technology is usually fine, but watch login, forms and databases: who can see which data? Have that checked if you process personal data.
